Snowmobiling in the Kootenay region of British Columbia, Canada is a very popular activity during the winter months. The high elevation mountains, the large number of hiking and biking wilderness trails, the network of gravel backcountry roads and the high accumulation of snowfall create ideal conditions every year for snowmobiling in the Kootenay backcountry.
Many communities have established snowmobile clubs, trail networks and tour companies. Many of the snowmobile clubs maintain trails throughout the season. Snowmobile safe zones (hectares of land) are set aside just for snowmobiling so not to cross paths with the nordic ski crowd.
The snowmobile trail network in the Kootenays consists of old gravel access roads, wagon roads, spur roads and summer recreation trails. All transformed into snowmobile routes by the seasonal snowfall. Services in the backcountry are limited, as can be expected, so preparation and good equipment is essential for a safe snowmobile adventure.
All snowmobilers in the backcountry should always check the avalanche reports, weather reports and road conditions prior to departure. Snowmobile groups should always explore with the proper backcountry tools like a survival kit including such items as avalanche beacons, GPS, shovels, long extended pool and flares.
No snowmobile group should ever leave on an adventure without leaving your return time and trip itinerary with someone back home.
Snowmobile tours and maps are available from the local snowmobile groups and tour operators operating from ski resorts and communities.
