| Nelson, BC, Canada is a recreation community, rich in history, situated on the shores of the West Arm of Kootenay Lake in the Kootenay region of British Columbia, Canada. The community is surrounded by looming snowcapped mountains, alpine glaciers, natural hot springs and forests. The community of Nelson, BC enjoys many of the services important to travelers. Some of the services available include accommodations, banks, restaurants, grocery stores, gas stations, laundromat, internet, coffee shops, gift stores and tour companies. Some of the businesses in Nelson, British Columbia operate out of heritage buildings located in the downtown core. Some dating back to the early 1900's like the Bank of Commerce (1907), Capitol Theatre (1924), Bank of Montreal (1899), Post office (1902) and the Nelson Daily News (1899). The community of Nelson, British Columbia is a year round recreation destination. In the summer months some of the activities enjoyed in the area include hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, fishing, cycling, birdwatching, canoeing, rock climbing, snorkeling, boating, sailing, swimming, wind surfing and golfing. You do not have to go far in Nelson to explore. In town, some visit the waterfall and Japanese Gardens in Cottonwood Falls Park. Some decide to explore Grohman Narrows Park and visit with the Painted Turtles. However, the most popular park destination in Nelson would be Lakeside Park. It rests on the West Arm of Kootenay Lake and includes a waterfront walkway, beautiful sandy beach, large grass lawns, statues, playing fields, wharf and flower gardens. The waterfront walkway is an excellent way to explore the community. Outside the community limits are some large wilderness parks worth exploring. Visit the Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park for hiking, backpacking, wildlife viewing and glaciers. A more family oriented park to visit is the Kokanee Creek Provincial Park. Here the family can camp and hike trails while visiting a wildlife museum and a spawning channel. After the snow has fallen, during the winter months, the outdoor recreation activities enjoyed in the region around nelson, BC include downhill skiing, snowboarding, heli skiing, cat skiing, cross country skiing, snowmobiling and ice fishing. Whitewater Mountain is the ski hill serving the community of Nelson. The backcountry gravel roads and alpine valleys outside of Nelson are popular for snowmobiling and cross country skiing. One area for snowmobiling is located north of Nelson called the Kokanee Snowmobile Trails. While the cross country ski trails known as the Apex Busk and Clearwater Creek XC Ski Trails are located south of Nelson. |
