Balfour, BC, Canada
Balfour, BC is a small village located on the shores of Kootenay Lake in the Kootenay region of British Columbia, Canada. Just south of the community is Nelson, B.C. and just north is Kaslo, British Columbia, Canada.
The location of Balfour on the west shore of Kootenay Lake, at the mouth of the Kootenay River (West Arm), is the location of a vital transportation link - the Kootenay Lake Ferry. The ferry service transports vehicles and pedestrians across the lake connecting Balfour with Crawford Bay.
To bypass the long drive south around Kootenay Lake many travelers and locals decide to take the ferry across thus saving them many hours.
However... Balfour, British Columbia is much more than a ferry terminal. The small community is centrally located providing quick access to glaciers, provincial parks, a boat launch, hiking trails and hot springs.
Travelers can enjoy a few shops at the ferry terminal while waiting for boarding. There are even more shops scattered throughout the area including gift stores, a golf course, art studios and tours.
Balfour adventures include boating, fishing, and sailing on Kootenay Lake plus exploring backcountry hiking trails, gravel roads and British Columbia Provincial Parks - especially the Kokanee Creek Provincial Park and the Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park .
Please note that the ferry also provides transportation to a small enclave called Proctor which is isolated from the rest of the Kootenays by the West Arm Provincial Park. Many visit Proctor as part of a cycle tour or as a backpacking adventure.
