Summit Lake Park Entrance Picnic Shelter

Summit Lake Park is a high elevation mountain park located on Highway 6, situated between the communities of Nakusp and New Denver, BC in the West Kootenays of British Columbia, Canada.

Established in 1964, Summit Lake Park protects the ecosystems in the park and around the park including the sensitive wetlands, cedar and hemlock forests, abundant wildlife and reproductive riparian areas.

The 6 hectare recreation and campground park rests in a river valley in the Nakusp Range of the Selkirk Mountains between Upper Arrow Lake and Slocan Lake. From the sandy beach in the park, Summit Peak at 2270 metres is one of the higher peaks in sight.

Some of the summer activities enjoyed in the park include canoeing, fishing (rainbow trout), camping, boating and swimming. Canoes and boats are launched via a gravel roof top boat launch in the park or from any of the waterfront campsites.

The winter brings freezing temperatures and snow. Some of the activities enjoyed in the region of Summit Lake include ice fishing, snow mobiling and cross country skiing.

The highlight of the park is the lake and the 100 metre long pebble beach. Located on the beach is a day use area with picnic tables, a floating dock and pit toilets. The campground includes small campsites, picnic tables, flush toilets and a grassy lawn area with a picnic shelter.

Some of the wildlife in the park includes eagles, hawks, kingfishers, grizzly bears, cougars, toads and mountain goats. Mountain goats can often be seen on the mountain ridges with a good set of binoculars. Every fall the Western Toads migrate into the woods for hibernation.
