Kaslo River Trail is a wilderness recreation trail following the banks of the Kaslo River located west of the community of Kaslo in the Kootenay region of British Columbia, Canada. The trail is a year round sightseeing path constructed and maintained by the local community. The well maintained community trail project was designed to protect the sensitive riparian eco system lining the shores of the river , yet, still create some recreational and sightseeing benefits. The trail follows, both, the north and south banks of the river. The two recreation paths are connected by a 106 foot bridge on the west end and, on the east end, the community of Kaslo. Together they create a loop route for many activities. Some of the activities enjoyed include walking, hiking, jogging, birdwatching and mountain biking in the summer and cross country skiing in the winter. The north side trail is 1.2 kilometres long eventually connecting to Railroad Avenue in the community. The north side trail is wheelchair accessible and includes 8 interpretive stations. The south side of the river trail is 1.4 kilometres long and connects to Spruce Street near the golf course in town. Both trails have plans for expansion. Along the trail are a few areas with picnic tables and sitting benches. Some of the wildlife spotted from the Kaslo River Trail include the mule deer, lynx, northern alligator lizard, western toad, white tailed deer, long toed salamander, moose, black bear, grizzly bear and wolverine. Birdwatching is also a good activity to enjoy on the trail . Some of the birds spotted from the trail include the western bluebird, great blue heron, american kestrel, winter wren, stellar's jay and western bluebird, During the pioneer days between 1896 to 1962 the Kaslo River produced hydro electric power for the small community. When hiking along the trail there are still remnants of the historic dam, the pipeline and penstock once used to power up the area. How to Get to Kaslo River Trail Travel to the community of Kaslo , BC on Hwy #31. The primary trailhead entrance is located at the end of Railroad Avenue in the town of Kaslo. There is another trailhead entrance in town at the end of Spruce Street. There is also a western trailhead entrance located on Highway 31a as you are leaving Kaslo. |
