BC is a small community situated on the west side of Kootenay Lake where Kaslo River enters the lake. The community, originally referred to as Kane's Landing in 1893, is located in the Kootenay region of British Columbia, Canada situated between the Purcell and Selkirk mountains.
In the early days of the Kootenay region, Kaslo was a major commerce and transportation hub for gold, silver and lead miners and prospectors. Kaslo today, is a picturesque lakefront community with streets lined with buildings of the Victorian era, a waterfront with a touch of sternwheeler history and a backcountry recreation environment with wilderness trails and wildlife viewing opportunities. The services in the community of Kaslo that are important to travelers include restaurants, accommodations, coffee houses, a gas station, bank, ATM, grocery store, picnic sites and gift shops. A big attraction in the community of Kaslo is the SS Moyie situated on the waterfront of the village. The passenger vessel is an early 1900 sternwheeler on display as a museum. It is open to the public and is recognized as a National Heritage Site and BC Landmark. The region, in and around, the community of Kaslo is rich in adventure activities. During the summer months some of the activities enjoyed include hiking, sailing, canoeing, boating, camping, hang gliding, fishing, golfing, mountain biking, birdwatching, swimming, picnicking, houseboating and sightseeing. Kootenay Lake, spanning over 100 kilometres, is home to many activities including fishing for Gerrard Rainbow trout. Hiking is everywhere. Some of the recreation trails nearby include the Kaslo River Trail, Wardner Trail, Fletcher Falls and the Buchanan Lookout. Mountain bikers, starting from the streets of Kaslo, enjoy a network of single track trails and backcountry roads spanning over 100 kilometres. Located near Kaslo, are day trips and overnight backpacking adventures in the Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park. Some more hiking trails plus a a spawning channel and a wildlife interpretive centre are located in the Kokanee Creek Provincial Park. Hot springs are also a popular get-a-way for many families. South of Kaslo are the Ainsworth Hot Springs and west are the Nakusp Hot Springs. Winter in Kaslo, BC creates more outdoor activities. After the snow has fallen and the temperatures drop the area becomes a winter destination for those who enjoy snowmobiling, heli skiing, cross country skiing, ice fishing and snowshoeing. Not far away are the ski hills of Whitewater and Red Mountain. |
