Horseback Riding in the Kootenays EH

Horseback riding in the Kootenay region of British Columbia, Canada is an opportunity to explore mountain ranges, mighty rivers and alpine meadows. Kootenay horseback riding adventures provide some of the best opportunities to view the region on a grand scale over a long distance.

The selection of horseback riding trails accessed from many of the Kootenay communities consists of mixture of old access gravel roads, spur roads, historic wagon roads and long haul multi-use trails. The gravel roads lead into forests, climb switchbacks and travel along ridges leading to alpine summits, meadows and lakes. Most gravel roads in the backcountry allow horses however watch for large logging trucks and backcountry 4x4 vehicles. Also some of the gravel roads connect to multi use trails which are trails shared with hikers, backpackers and mountain bikers.

In some sections of the Kootenays are long haul multi use trails exploring valleys leading up to many summits, crossing mountain ranges, connecting to communities. Some of these horseback riding trails are shared trails with wilderness backpackers, mountain bikers and dirt bikers. Many of the long haul routes have wilderness campgrounds. It is important to check all trail routes for usage. Some trails are activity specific so check to make sure horseback riding is permitted.

Horseback riding in the Kootenays is enjoyed, either, by bringing your own horse or by staying at a guest ranch or by signing up with a horseback guiding company. Guiding companies and guest ranches provide lessons, horses and guides. Horseback riding trails follow all sorts of difficult terrain, elevation changes and weather conditions. Horseback tours require proper preparation so a guide is nice to have around. There is wildlife in the area so be aware and be smart. All trails require you to pack out what you pack it - leave no trace behind.
