| Golden,
BC is a year round recreation
community nestled in the north Kootenay region of British Columbia,
Canada known as Kicking Horse Country. Golden is surrounded
by major wilderness parks, looming mountain ranges, roaring
heritage rivers and protected wetlands.
The Kicking Horse River flows through the village
of Golden while the Columbia River borders the western boundaries
of the community. In the distance are the Purcell and Selkirk
Mountains dominating the skyline. A short distance away are
six major wilderness parks including the Glacier,
Yoho, Revelstoke,
Banff, Kootenay and Jasper National Parks.
Many who visit Golden arrive for the recreation
activities abundant in the region. During the summer months
white water rafting, hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing,
backpacking, wilderness camping, golfing, fishing, birdwatching,
paragliding, horseback riding, wildlife tours and hang gliding
are popular activities.
Popular day hike destinations include the Gorman
Lake Trail and the Thompson
Falls Trail. More longer day hikes and overnight backpacking
adventures are located in the nearby national parks. Some of
the remote, rugged long haul wilderness trails are shared with
mountain bikers and horseback riders while others are designated
for hiking only. The best hike in town that provides great views
of the village and rivers is the Rotary
Loop Trail.
Golden enjoys a very good selection of mountain
biking trails providing plenty of downhill and single track
terrain. One of the most popular destinations for mountain biking
is the Mt. 7 Lookout, Moonraker
and Kicking Horse Mountain.
In the winter months, after the snow has fallen,
the community of Golden becomes a prime winter destination for
activities like downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross country
skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, heli skiing, ice climbing,
dog sledding and ice fishing. Kicking
Horse Mountain is the full service ski resort located in
Golden.
The community of Golden is easily accessed
from the Trans Canada Highway (Hwy #1). The community enjoys
many of the amenities important to travelers like accommodations,
restaurants, gas stations, internet, laundromat, grocery stores,
banks, cafes and gift shops. |
