| Fernie,
BC is a recreation
community surrounded by wilderness and wildlife located in the East Kootenay region
of British Columbia, Canada. The community rests on the shores of the mighty Elk River surrounded by mountains with names like Polar Peak, Grizzly Peak, Three Sisters, Mt. Proctor and Hosmer Mountain.
The small community of Fernie has some of the services and amenities
important to travelers. Some of the services in the community include accommodations, restaurants, gas stations,
banks, grocery stores, internet, laundromat, coffee houses,
pubs, repair shops, tours, attractions and gift stores.
The downtown core of Fernie consists of one main street lined with stores, shops, boutiques, rental shops and restaurant buildings. There is a massive community trail network within the community of Fernie which is ideal for getting from one end of town to the other. Hence, why many of the locals bike and cycle.
During the summer months some of the activities
enjoyed, in and around Fernie, include hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, cycling, camping,
birdwatching, golfing, wind surfing, wildlife
viewing, fishing, boating, river &
lake kayaking, horseback riding, picnicking, canoeing, off roading,
dirt biking and atving.
During the winter months after the snow has fallen some of the activities enjoyed in the community include cross country skiing, dog sledding, snowshoeing, downhill skiing, snowboarding and ice fishing. Fernie Alpine Resort is the popular destination for winter activities like skiing and snowboarding.
The backcountry forests in Fernie is home to many hiking trails. Some hiking trails follow rivers, some lead to lakes, some climb mountains and some do it all. The Three Sisters Hiking Trail, Mt Proctor Trail, Hosmer Mountain Trail and the Fairy Creek Trail are just a few of the hiking routes in the region.
Some of the popular provincial park destinations in the area include the Kikomun Provincial Park and the Mount Fernie Provincial Park.
There are many fresh water lakes in the region. Too many to list. However, some of the popular lakes in the region ideal for recreational activities include the man-made reservoir lake named Koocanusa and some others worth recognizing like Maiden, Hartley, Surveyors and Hidden Lakes. |
