Moyie Lake Provincial Park is a recreation destination
located south of the community of Cranbrook. BC in the East
Kootenay region of British Columbia, Canada. The campground
and day use park is situated on the shores of Moyie Lake and
provides the only public access to the lake.
Moyie Lake Provincial Park
is 90.5 hectares and was established in 1959. The park was established
to protect the habitat around the lake as it is home to many
plants and wildlife. Some of the wildlife protected in the park
include beaver, muskrat, whitetail deer, songbirds, shorebirds
and waterfowl.
The park activities popular
in the summer months include swimming, picnicking, boating,
kayaking, canoeing, wind surfing, sailing, birdwatching and
fishing. When enjoying an activity on the lake it is important
to note that the lake is prone to sudden changes in wind and
temperatures.
The campground is mostly under
tree cover while the day use area is situated on large grass
lawns exposed to the sun. The region around the lake consists
of many eco systems. The dry areas tend to have more larch,
white spruce and lodgepole pine trees. While closer to the wet
areas around the lake there are black cottonwood and alder trees.
The day use area on Moyie Lake fronts a large
sandy beach. The well manicured grass lawns are covered with
picnic tables. Some tables sit out in the open while others
have shelters over them. There are change rooms, flush toilets,
interpretive signs, a large parking lot and a boat launch in
the day use area also.
The campground in the park
is a large one with 111 campsites. Each campsite consists of
a picnic table and fire pit. The well maintained campground
includes hot showers, an adventure playground, sani station
, flush toilets, water taps, amphitheatre and hiking trails.
There are two hiking trails
in the park. Both are interpretive trails with signs describing
the wildlife and habitat. The Meadow Trail is a short 2 kilometre
trek through the forest located near the park gates. The Kettle
Pond Trail begins near the amphitheatre in the campground.
How to Get to Moyie
Lake Provincial Park:
Travel south on highway #3/95
from the community of Cranbrook, B.C. Continue traveling south
for approximately 20 kilometres. Look for the entrance of the
park marked by a big Moyie Lake Provincial Park sign on your
