Mountain Biking in the Kootenay region of British Columbia, Canada is is very well developed and is always growing. The Kootenay region landscape, much of it is wilderness, consists of many high alpine mountain ranges and deep river valleys which creates many opportunities for downhill and cross country mountain biking adventures. Every community in the Kootenays enjoys mountain biking adventures. However, some communities offer more adventure for mountain bikers than others.

Some of the Kootenay communities in British Columbia have gone all out in constructing a mountain bike trail networks with skills parks. The trail networks are well signed, well maintained and well used in most cases. Many cater to all skill levels including beginner, advanced and expert mountain bikers. Some advanced trails have structures built into them like boardwalk high bank corners, ramps, drops and bridges.

During the summer some of the ski mountains in the Kootenays transform themselves into downhill mountain biking resorts operating lifts taking bike and rider to the summit of alpine mountains. At the base of the lifts are the resort villages with outdoor restaurant patios, tours, shops and lots of activity. The developed mountain biking communities attract a big mountain biking crowd during the summer months. It must be the downhill.

Some of the Kootenay communities support green transportation. So green that they have created an extensive paved recreation trail network within their communities thus connecting all corners of the community together. The trail systems are shared trails used by walkers, dog walkers, joggers and bikers. Instead of driving many prefer to bike to and from destinations like work, visiting friends, picking up groceries and shopping downtown - rain or shine.

Mountain bikers will be glad to hear that the Kootenays also has a good selection of wilderness mountain biking adventures navigating through forests, along mountain ridges, through alpine meadows leading to alpine summits. Some trails are long haul overnight rides while others are challenging day rides. Most wilderness trails have no services (maybe a pit toilet). Some are well signed while others follow tree markers.

The mountain biking backcountry trails are often shared with hikers, backpackers and horseback riders. Keep your head up and pay respect to all who explore the trail. Please do not stray off the trails in the backcountry as it destroys some of the sensitive vegetation. Beware of wildlife. Always pack out what you pack in and leave no trace behind so other mountain bikers can enjoy the scenery too.
